- Why are so many serial killers from Washington state? Outside observation: The majority were not born in Washington State. They either moved there as children, they were stationed there at one of the various military installations which dot the st.
Yates grew up in Oak Harbor Washington in a middle class family and he and his family attended the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Early on Yates worked for the Washington State Department of Corrections and then after only six months with the D.O.C. he enlisted in the US Army where he had a very successful 19 year military career.
Serial Killer Robert L. Spokane, Washington. A middle-aged father of 5, Robert L. Yates Jr., a decorated military helicopter pilot, and National Guardsman was convicted of 15 murders but suspected of as many as 18. The most prolific serial killer ever sentenced in Washington state, he now sits on death row.
Sometime in early 1996 for no apparent reason Yates just started to hunt and kill prostitutes in Spokane's Skid Row area. He had used the services of prostitutes in the area before he had just never killed them before. He stated at his trial when he was asked why he killed prostitutes that it was just something that needed doing.
Yates would pick up prostitutes in his van and take them to remote areas. There he would have sex with them and then he usually killed them with a single gun shot to the head and he would dump their nude bodies in remote locations often posing the women in strange suggestive sexual poses. In almost every case he made calls from pay phones to local authorities telling the police where to find a particular woman.
However in the case of one of his early victims Melody Murfin he buried her just outside his bedroom window. In fact just outside the bedroom window of the bedroom he shared with his wife.
It was on August 1 , 1998 that Yates picked up Spokane Prostitute Christine Smith. He shot her in the head , had sex with her and robbed her but Smith managed to escape and made her way to the local police. Yates was not arrested until April 18th 1999.He was asked in September of 1998 to give a DNA sample but he had refused on the grounds that he was a happily married man.
Police used DNA found in a white corvette Yates had previously owned to tie him to 12 of his victims. In 2000 Yates was convicted of 13 murders and as part of a deal he had made to avoid the death penalty he was sentenced to 408 years. Yates plead guilty to the murders to avoid the death penalty.
However Pierce County Washington in 2001 convicted Yates of the murders of Melinda L Mercer and Connie Ellis and Yates received the death penalty for these two murders. And Yates is currently on death row in Washington State waiting for the day when he will die by lethal injection.
It is interesting to note here that Yates was sexually abused by an older neighborhood boy when he was six years old. It was also reported that Yates abused neighborhood animals as a child. It was also reported at around age 11 he was suspected of setting a fire in an empty house but it could never be proved.
After Yates was arrested his wife came forward and told of a morning Yates came home after being out all night with a huge amount of blood in the back of his van. He got cleaning supplies from the house and cleaned up the blood after telling his wife he had hit a dog and took it to a local veterinarian where the dog died. Its also interesting to note that Yates wife had no knowledge of him owning a handgun even though he owned several.

- The pic is of richard cottingham; a serial killer from the ny/nj area. Not yates.
- Crazyhorseghost..I am a new hubber and just ran across this story of yours. Good read..& am wondering, have you written anything about the dude from New York..'Joel Rifkin?' He was another serial killer of prostitutes..but I don't think he had as normal a history as Yates..Voted up and interesting.
- I have always believed people who does such kind of acts as people who are self indoctrinated being people who does such from an intentional point. I suggest one of the ways they could be helped is to explain off their mindsets to give them new grounds off their envy, anger, wrath and all such emotions as led them to such an 'addiction'.
- I really hope you find a publisher for that book, Ron Lewis.
- I knew Bob when he was a young child. I have written an unpublished book about him. I was a very close friend of Anna Mae.
- This individual is obviously mentally ill. However, because he poses a danger to society, execution is warranted.
- The guy looks very spooky; I really wondered that his wife didn't know what was going on.

Could you talk about yourself any more Mark Fuhrman?

If you can get past who the author is (and the infamous case he was a big part of is mentioned briefly a couple of times), this is actually a good read. It is a bit dated, but it’s an interesting perspective that reads like a whodunit at times. When several bodies of prostitutes start turning up in the mid and late 90s, the local law enforcement in Spokane (and other areas) find themselves looking at a serial killer case. Much of the story concerns the investigation (and what Fuhrman lists as th..more

A friend and I read this one together and I believe I still own it. I am so glad that Mark Furman wrote this book and showed how the police just didn't care about all the lives that were lost. What was wrong with them?

In this one, Fuhrman digs into an unsolved serial-murder case which I believe has since been cracked. It's a good read.

Good read, but not entirely fair or complete
This book is interesting because it allows us some further insight into the personality of Mark Fuhrman, one time LAPD detective, and fall guy for the prosecution in the O. J. Simpson debacle. It is interesting to see how Fuhrman's loyalties and perspective have changed from the siege mentality of a beleaguered cop to the free and easy skepticism of a freelance journalist. One thing is clear: he has extended his fifteen minutes of fame by becoming a wr..more

Murder in Spokane: Catching a Serial Killer by Mark Fuhrman
When I read John Douglas's books, I'm amazed at the arrogance and self-importance I see. After reading Murder in Spokane, however, I have found a worthy rival for Douglas.
It only took a few pages for him to bring up the OJ business and his other books (Murder in Brentwood and Murder in Greenwich). In fact, the book jacket proclaims:
Mark Fuhrman's bestseller Murder in Greenwich led to Michael Skakel's arrest [in the Martha Moxley case] .

I haven't read that much but I'm not sure I'm going to be able to get through it. I'll probably continue to try because I'm interested in the story, but I don't believe his view anyway. He's cocky and so self-righteous and spends so much time bad mouthing the police department that in my opinion it discredits his point of view. I may or may not finish it, but will also try to find a credible author that wrote about this case. Too bad it's not an Anne Rule book.

This book is about a serial killer in Spokane in the mid to late 90's, and how the detectives bungled the investigation. I am an admirer of the police, but in this case they seriously screwed up and could have prevented the last 10 murders if they had been doing their job.
I used to be a true crime junkie, but I read less now because they get so bogged down in the trial and all the legalilities. However, this one had none of that and dealt strictly with the investigation.

I didn't make it very far. His writing totally puts me off. He's way to self important. The part I made it through was more about how great he was than the case. while I want to know the story since I grew up near Spokane I may have to look for a different book.

Well documented and well written. A disturbing case that never got much media attention. If true crime books involving serial killers are of interest I encourage you to read this book.

I read this book about 10 years ago, after moving to Spokane and came across this book on a freebie shelf. I hadn't read a true crime novel in several years, and reading about the crime taking place where I was now living - being able to actually go to those places or see those places was rather 'trippy' I guess. So, given all that, overall I thought the book was enjoyable. And I'm writing this review 10 years after reading it, so I may not be remembering details that might have originally annoy..more

I really wanted to read this book. It takes place in a area that I am familiar with. Unfortunately Mark Fuhrman makes it nearly impossible to get through the book due to his self praise. I can only take so much arrogance.
